Cargill global scholars program gives 10 Indian students from leading institutions leadership development opportunities

70 undergraduate students over 7 years have benefitted from global program

Bengaluru, September 13, 2019 – Cargill, in partnership with the Institute of International Education (IIE), announced the winners of Cargill Global Scholars Program 2019.  This is a two-year scholarship program that provides financial support as well as leadership development opportunities to undergraduate students across six countries. In India, 10 scholarships are being awarded for this academic year (2019-2020) to students from leading science and technology institutions – Delhi Technological University; Indian Institute of Technology Bombay; Indian Institute of Technology Delhi; Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar; and National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli.

Cargill Global Scholars Program is being run in six countries including India, Brazil, China, Russia, Indonesia and the United States. It has awarded scholarships to more than 430 students globally from academic years 2013-2014 to 2019-2020. This includes 70 students from India who display exemplary academic skills and leadership competencies.

Students selected as Cargill Global Scholars will receive scholarship funds of US$2,500 per year for up to two years and will be invited to take part in a series of activities designed to enhance their thinking skills and equip them with the tools necessary for becoming decision makers in their chosen fields. Students also gain valuable opportunities to observe and learn from business and community leaders in their own countries.

Speaking on the occasion, Simon George, President, Cargill India said, “The Cargill Global Scholars program’s vision is to build future leaders. In addition to the scholarship, students will receive academic and professional guidance as well as counseling from Cargill leaders. This program also offers them opportunities to enrich their critical thinking skills and prepares them to become future global leaders.”

Rutvi from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay said, “Cargill Global Scholars Program is an excellent opportunity for my holistic development both as an individual and on a professional level. The Leadership and Mentorship aspects of the program inclined me to apply for it. Through this program I expect to learn new perspectives and cultures and opening myself to new ideas and opinions. I think that Cargill, through this program, has given me a platform where I can grow, innovate, nurture creativity and be more aware of the world that I live in.”

Shashvat Jayakrishnan from National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli said, “I see the Cargill Global Scholars Community as the harbinger of refined global leadership, forming a community of young leaders. Being a Cargill scholar, I feel I bear a responsibility as a global citizen leader to make this world a better place by initiating constructive change and stitching the fabric of society with threads of culture and equality. The benefits of this program are multi-pronged, while the financial award will help support my academic endeavours, the mentorship program and leadership seminars would help me realise my potential, learn new skills and open to me a plethora of new opportunities and career options.”

As the Global Scholars complete their leadership and enrichment activities under this program and graduate from their universities, they will join the international alumni network of Cargill Global Scholars, where enrichment and networking opportunities will continue.

Vivek Mansukhani, Head, Institute of International Education (IIE), India says, “the Institute of International Education (IIE) supports programs that allows young students to learn more about entrepreneurship, leadership and excellence and provides them a global perspective at a critical stage of their careers. IIE believes that the Cargill Global Scholars Program does just that and is privileged to collaborate with Cargill on this exciting program.”
