In 2009, Cargill sponsored a very important project in the slums of Mumbai named Reach Out2Water Solutions under the Slum Water Program. The project was conducted in collaboration with IIT Mumbai and Bombay Municipal Corporation and threw some stark facts about the living conditions and the water issues of the slum dwellers in Mumbai.
There are about 4.4 million slum dwellers without home water, average income of the family of 5 is ~ USD 120 per month and they end up spending ~ USD 2 on water per month. They barely manage to get about 30L water per day/per person as against WHO recommendation of 30L. There are ~ 6.3 million incidences of water borne diseases resulting in ~ 5600 deaths per year. BMC Supplies water for approx 5 hrs a day and women and children spend about 1-3 hours per day on water fetching.
