Significance of Dry Period

After about nine months of lactation, cows need to go through a dry period. In advanced stages of pregnancy, milk production drops sharply. Some animals give very little milk as early as 2-3 months before calving. This is a good sign.

Low milk production diverts energy towards the growing fetus and allows the mammary tissue to recover. Damaged mammary tissue is replaced so that more milk production can be obtained in the next lactation. If the animal is not dried, the mammary tissue keeps getting damaged without getting an opportunity to recover. This reduces the amount of mammary tissue capable of producing milk. Studies indicate that cows that are dried two months before calving give up to 125 litres more milk in the next lactation.

Hence, it is important stop milk production from your cows two months before calving.
