Cargill Joins hands with CII to trigger a nationwide movement to create awareness around food safety

We believe, in today’s complex and interdependent food supply chain, food safety is a shared responsibility of the farmers, the food industry, regulators as well as consumers. As a company dedicated to nourishing people, our goal is to provide safe food every time, everywhere.

Taking forward our commitment around food safety, we have joined hands with CII-FACE as the ‘National Industry Partner’ for an initiative on awareness around food safety-‘Surakshit Khadya Abhiyan’.This nation-wide movement is supported by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs- Food and Public Distribution, Government of India amongst other partners such as NASVI (National Association of Street Vendors of India) and VOICE- a consumer organisation. This National program is in line with the government’s initiative “Jago Grahak Jago” focused on promoting Consumer Welfare. This Campaign is also aligned to the countrywide mission “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” for ensuring Clean Surroundings and Clean Environment.

The program was launched on July 21, by the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Shri Ram Vilas Paswan in the presence of members from CII, Cargill, industry, media and others.

Strengthen Countrywide Awareness and Capacity Building on Safe and Hygienic Food for All

THE CONTEXT

Food Safety is a major global concern amongst consumers. Globally, Governments and other stakeholders are intensifying efforts to improve Food Safety and Quality. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has put in place the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, Rules and Regulations 2011 for not only Food Products but for Production processes including those for Petty Food Business Operators. Focusing on Food Safety can help in effectively preventing and controlling many food borne epidemics in our country that impacts the large rural and urban population. Moreover this will improve the awareness of Petty Food Business Operators and Consumers on simple measures to ensure Safe Food for All. While India is one among the leading Wheat, Rice, Milk and Fruit and Vegetable producer, a focus on the Food Safety, Quality and Wastage of foods would help enhance domestic trade and export.

NASVI (National Association of Street Vendors of India) an organization working for the protection of the livelihood rights of thousands of street vendors across the country.

VOICE (Voluntary Organization in Interest of Consumer Education), an organization active in humanitarian aid worldwide.

OBJECTIVES

Enhance Consumer Awareness on Labels, Storage conditions and related practices to Food.

Disseminate Hygienic practices amongst Street Food Vendors, Schools and Colleges.

Sensitise Consumers, Service providers and Food Processors including Railways, Food Storage Locations, Midday Meal schemes, Street Food Vendors, Mass Caterings on how to produce and consume Safe Food.

Build Capacity on Food Safety Benchmarks with Best Practices Sharing Summits, Workshops, Training Programs, Short Term Professional Courses with Partners of international repute, Food Safety Award Programs and others.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

The broad elements of the National Program across the country would comprise:

  • Launch Program in New Delhi on 21 July 2015
  • Walkathons on Safe Food in 8 Locations across the country.
  • Food Safety Advocacy Programs like Consumer Awareness Training, Street Plays, Street Food Training Programs, Workshops and Round Tables
  • Wide Dissemination through Media
